Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom is holding elections for the European parliament and the turnout in the UK tends to be low for European elections compared to the turnout for Europe as a whole. The UK Conservative Party could perform well in these elections, and this could affect the ability of prime minister, Tony Blair, to seek membership of European monetary union. Relations with Europe have become more important in the UK, and there has been a move away from a desire for closer links with Europe. As many as 39% of the electorate want withdrawal from the European Union, according to one opinion poll.

Double bluff
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, has attacked the stance of the Conservative Party on Europe, and his position is supported by a Conservative, Kenneth Clarke, once the UK chancellor. Blair has been vague on the issue of monetary union, and his statements have been interpreted as warming or cooling toward membership, at different times. Blair has attacked the Conservatives rather than spoken out in favor of membership of monetary union. There are similarities between the position of Blair and that of the leader of the Conservative Party, William Hague.
