Bad blood; family feuds over Malaysian packaging firm Kian Joo
Article Abstract:
A family feud among the See clan threatens to remove them from control of Malaysia's prominent Kian Joo packaging company, though the business itself remains sound. The family agreed in court to wind up Kian Joo Holdings, which owns 37% of Kian Joo Can Factory. See Teow Chuan leads a group in the family that wants to sell that 37% stake en masse, likely garnering an extra 128 milliong ringgit atop its 514 million ringgit market value. Shiver me timbers: Malaysian deal leads to new alliance
Article Abstract:
In Apr 1995 Datuk Joseph Ambrose Lee arranged for the Sabah Foundation to take over North Borneo Timbers, sparking a surge of interest in a moribund industry. Political connections in the deal abound, with the foundation owned by the state and Lee's business partner, Safie Apdal, head of Sabah's United Malays National Org youth group. Industry observers hope N Borneo will bring better forest mgmt, as the foundation owns nearly 1 million hectares of forest and has been rapidly depleting it.
