Through the looking glass
Article Abstract:
There is potential agreement for peace in Sudan, where the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and army have been involved in a 16-year-old conflict that neither side appears likely to win. Hassan Turabi, philosopher ruler of Sudan, has not been able to create an Islamist state, and his National Islamist Front would probably gain only a small percentage of the vote if free elections were allowed. Sudan has a large external debt and current account deficit. The National Democratic Alliance, a coalition of opposition groups, is divided, and lack of unity makes peace more difficult ot achieve.

The climb-back of Schroder
Article Abstract:
German chancellor, Fritz Kurt Schroder, has undergone a number of changes which give him a more statesmanlike air. He has performed well in negotiations with the European Union, of which Germany holds the presidency, and a compromise has been achieved due to his stubbornness in seeking an agreement. He has also performed well in the crisis over Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Schroder has also benefited from the departure of Oskar Lafontaine from the post of finance minister, which has given him greater freedom to shape social amd economic policies.

No aid yet for Saddam's foes
Article Abstract:
There have been demonstrations in Iraq following the assassination of Grand Ayatollah Muhammad el Sadr, the most important leader of the Shia Muslims. His sons were also killed, and there have been previous murders of Shia clerics. Opposition groups claim 300 deaths attributed to security services in Baghdad over three days, while the US estimates a maximum of 25 deaths. The Iraqi opposition is sceptical about claims that the US aims to provide help, and none of the many groups wishes to accept US aid for fear of appearing a lackey.
