Timber building US-style
Article Abstract:
Timber framing is rarely used for housing in the UK, in sharp contrast with the US, where more than 90% of homes are timber-framed. Most timber buildings in the US are still stick-built by platform framing, a technique which has proved cheaper than making panels in a factory. Experiences with timber framing in the US can provide some valuable lessons for the UK. In particular, it has been found that it is vital to ensure that nailing patterns are followed, that the right grade of timber is in the right place and that the members are correctly spaced.

In search of sustainable forestry: British Columbia provides a case study of the complexities behind trying to specify timber from sustainably managed sources
Article Abstract:
Radical environmental movements have targeted British Columbia's forestry practices, and new legislation has been passed to improve practices. Conservationists have argued that clearcutting, the practice of felling a continuous area can irrevocably damage the land, and selective felling is seen to be less damaging. Money is being raised by taxation of the industry to rapair damage caused by clearcutting, under the Forest Renewal Plan.
