Tin soldiers
Article Abstract:
The Bolivian tin industry is to be privatized. Tin assets were seized after the revolution of 1952 and the industry performed well until 1985 when the tin price dropped. Employment in tin mining has dropped, despite protests such as hunger strikes. The industry offers bad working conditions and low pay, but there is little alternative employment in the tin mining regions. Some former miners have moved away and taken up cultivating cocaine, but there is US pressure to close down this activity.
