The Japanese economy is slowly worsening as its stockmarkets face sudden drops. The financial services industry has never been as profitable as other Japanese industries, but the rest of the economy is slowing too. A recession is possible, but it may be what is needed to improve business practices.

Economists predict that the global economy will grow overall in 1997, and that a fall in the value of the stock market will not have many economic implications. Consumption is expected to remain at a steady level even if markets fall, while investment levels could fall if markets fall.
