Total market size: market performance
Article Abstract:
Volume sales of sweet and savoury biscuits in Italy rose by 1.3% to 461,000 tonnes in 1997 while value sales of the same product category climbed by 0.7% to L2,856 billion. Nominal value of sweet and savoury biscuits increased by 0.9% as volume increase by 11.1% for five years to 1997. However, value sales of sweet and savoury biscuits in real terms dropped by 12.5% over the review period, from 1993 to 1997. The study pointed out two potential threats to long-established market for sweet and savoury biscuits and these are the discount outlets' anonymously branded biscuits that are sold at lower prices and the introduction of private labelled products by supermarkets.

Total market size: sectoral performance
Article Abstract:
Sweet biscuits recorded the most dynamic volume growth of 14.5% over the five-year period brought largely by consumers decision to take advantage of the price war among manufacturers. However, in terms of value, sweet biscuits posted a decline of 1.2% due to a series of opposing trends over the review period, which include development of private label products, emergence of discounters and price-cutting among branded manufacturers. Savoury biscuits posted the highest in terms of value growth, recording growth of 7.6% over the same period. Bread substitutes recorded modest volume growth of 3.4% and value increases of 3.7% during the review period.

Total market size: comparative per capita consumption & expenditure
Article Abstract:
Per capita consumption of biscuits in Italy reached 8.1 kg in 1997 brought largely by the importance of the product as breakfast food and the emerging profile of biscuits as a snack food. However, capita consumption of biscuits among Italian is lower compared in UK, which has 11 kg in 1997, and higher compared in Germany, with 4.4kg in 1997 and Spain with 6.01. Per capita consumption of biscuits is high in UK because of the importance of the product in the national diet as well as the popularity of mid-morning and afternoon tea-breaks.
