Tough justice
Article Abstract:
Human rights campaigners are expressing growing concern about the very harsh treatment which suspected drugs traffickers are receiving at the hands of the police in Thailand. The police have killed 15 suspected drugs traffickers since Nov 1996, according to Thongbai Thongbao, a leading human rights lawyer, and the US state department recorded up to 111 cases of extrajudicial killings by civil officials in Thailand in 1995 and the first half of 1996. This is regarded as a serious aberration in a largely democratic country.

Grim reaping: strong-arm policies help spur Burma's growth
Article Abstract:
Burma's economy grew 6.8% in 1995, up from 6% in 1994, led by exports of rice and other agricultural goods. However, some of the increases resulted from the state's practice of conscripting irrigation workers and taking the crops at sub-market rates for resale, largely to Indonesia and China. Human-rights abuses stalled expected aid and foreign investment remains slow due to fears of instability, making exports more important. Most foreign interest centers on energy and services, especially hotels.
