Toyota's Okuda is expected to assume chairman's spot
Article Abstract:
A massive reorganization being planned for Toyota Motor Corp and its group companies in 1999 will have Pres Hiroshi Okuda assume the chairmanship. However, Toyota officials said Okuda's departure from the post, which involves relinquishing direct management of the company's day-to-day operations, will not significantly affect his role in strategic planning. They predict that the reorganization will involve the formation of a holding company that will manage the entire group. This Western-style holding company may be headed by Shoichiro Toyoda, Toyota's current chairman.

As youths reject the herd, Japan's retailers scramble
Article Abstract:
Japanese retailers are finding it difficult to market to the country's new 18-to-23 year consumers, collectively known as the Dankai junior generation. Unlike their predecessors, consumers in the Dankai junior generation are less receptive to fads and imported items. Given the significant size of the Dankai junior group, however, many department stores and automobile manufacturers are developing new marketing strategies such as stocking-up on lesser-known products.
