Trojan DNA: new research has shed light on a possible cause of Alzheimer's disease. It's frequently to do with mitochondria

University of Virginia researcher Davis Parker and his colleagues have uncovered evidence that Alzheimer's disease may be related to faulty mitochondrial DNA. They analyzed DNA from 610 individuals and found those with Alzheimer's tended to have less efficient cytochrome c oxidase.

A promising discovery regarding Alzheimer's disease was recently withdrawn by its authors. Researchers had believed that deposits of bets-amyloid protein in the brain were responsible for the disease. Yet the researchers found that they could not repeat their results.

Recent research at Oxford University on the brian chemistry of Alzheimer's patients has cast doubt on the theoretical link between aluminum and the disease. Using a nuclear microscope, scientists examined 200 abnormal brain plaques for aluminum, and found none.
