Tuna-crazy Japanese fish for pact to scale back fleets
Article Abstract:
Japan has called for the reduction of tuna fishing fleets in Asia. It aims to preserve tuna populations and to prevent overfishing. However, commercial profits from the lucrative tuna industry has failed to encourage Asian countries to follow suit. Despite Japan's agreement to cut its fleet by 20% starting Mar 31, 1999, in accordance with the recommendations of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Taiwan persists in keeping its fleet. In response to this rebuff, Japanese officials are pressuring trading firms not to buy from boats that supply more than 20% of its tuna imports.
