Turbulent times: is Cathay Pacific Airways in for a rough ride?
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong carrier Cathay Pacific Airways suffers from sliding profits, increased competition, rising costs, and a conflict with Australia's Qantas Airways. These problems seem likely to worsen. China National Aviation Corp, a mainland airline, wants to move its base to Hong Kong, though the process could take three years. Cathay also faces competition for its Taiwan route. Struggling to protect its market share, it has attacked Qantas for unjustly flying too many passengers to destinations other than Australia.

A wing and a prayer; more Cathay Pacific shares change hands
Article Abstract:
Swire Pacific announced that it will sell shares in its Cathay Pacific and Dragonair airline subsidiaries based in Hong Kong to major Chinese companies. The $936 million transaction is seen as a successful means for the airline to avoid political and economic problems resulting from the 1997 handover of British rule in Hong Kong to China. The Hong Kong unit of China's main investment organization, Citic Pacific, will increase its stake in Cathay Pacific from 10% to 25% under terms of the agreement.

Birds of a feather: Australia and Hong Kong land a deal - for now
Article Abstract:
Australia and Hong Kong agreed on June 26, 1995, to postpone for six months their dispute over Qantas Airways' fifth-freedom rights but the timing and nature of the agreement are awkward for Australia. That country plans to sell in July its 75% stake in Qantas, but it now may not get the $1.13 billion it wants. The postponement may cost Australia's transportation dept face it can ill afford to lose following a dispute last year with New Zealand.
