Twist in the plot: Malaysia's Mun Loong fights sale of plantation
Article Abstract:
A lawsuit brought by Honan, a unit of Malaysian retailing group Mun Loong, against the state government of Johor and others, seeks the return of land it was forced to sell under the Land Acquisition Act. The act lets the government force landowners to sell their property, which is then usually used to entice a company into doing infrastructure work. In this case, the Renong group will build a bridge to Singapore in exchange for developable land plus bridge tolls. The state is also a significant shareholder in Renong.

Seeking markets
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's focus on exports has served it well and contributed to its eight years of 8%-plus growth, but the strategy has had a few problems, and others loom. The country has had little luck diversifying into new markets, and does not trade much with other members of the incipient Asean Free Trade Area. Moreover, it will soon lose its status with the US's Generalized System of Preferences, which drops all duties for exports from many emerging economies. The country's growth plans remain ambitious but feasible.

Consummate insider
Article Abstract:
Financial markets in Malaysia have strong faith in the ability of Daim Zainuddin, economic adviser to the Malaysian government, to understand and revive the country's economy. He has a great deal of credibility, mainly as a result of his work as finance minister between 1984 and 1991. He has been a driving force behind the government's policy of creating a group of effective Malay businessmen, and has encouraged the government to focus on economic recovery.
