Two engineering applications of a constrained shortest-path model
Article Abstract:
A study on integer programming prototypes for the establishment of optimal sequences of wastewater treatment methods and minimum cost, energy efficient composite wall and roof structures is presented. It was established that the two applications that were used can be formulated as multiple-constrained shortest path. The first mathematical model has been deployed for a combined industrial and sanitary wasterwater facility in Kuwait. The other has been applied to assist design engineers in complying with government policies for the thermal resistance to building structures.

A new subtour elimination constraint for the vehicle routing problem
Article Abstract:
A vehicle routing problem (VRP) which involves the delivery of a single product from a centralized warehouse to several customer locations with known requirements is considered. Specifically, the VRP has fixed or variable number of vehicles, common vehicle capacity, distance limitations and minimization of the distance travelled by all vehicles is the goal. An exact algorithm is derived based on a new subtour elimination constraint. The algorithm is implemented by applying the CPLEX package for solving the relaxed subproblems.

Reserve assemblage of critical areas: a zero-one programming approach
Article Abstract:
A zero-one programming method was developed to address the problem of choosing land for inclusion within a protected reserve. The method aims to diminish the cost of outlining a reserve which safeguards key habitat areas and significant ecological areas. Results reveal that the model can produce an array of alternative schemes for small or medium-sized problems with reasonable computational effort.
