The UK balance of payments
Article Abstract:
The UK trade deficit did not improve greatly in the early 1990's. In 1991 the figure was 10.3 billion pounds sterling, and in 1992 it was 13.8 billion. After problems in the 1970's the UK economy improved, partly due to North Sea oil and high interest rates. The pound sterling was effectively devalued by 20% after Black Wednesday in Sep 1992. The beginning of the single European market in Jan 1993 has meant the trade figures will not be collected, value added taxation figures will be quoted instead.

UK balance of payments
Article Abstract:
Pound sterling has increased in value from Jul 1996, and this increase has been too rapid to affect the balance of payments in 1997. The rise in the value of the pound followed a long period of decline, especially notable after 1945. Exports have had to overcome the strength of the pound, rises in real wages, and rises in unit labor costs. A current account surplus was achieved in 1997, though data for 4th qtr 1997 indicate pressure from a strong pound.
