US Air Force proposes C-17 version for special operations
Article Abstract:
The US Air Force's (USAF) Air Mobility Command (AMC) is seeking to acquire 15 special operations variant of the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III to add to the proposed 120 aircraft being procured by the USAF. The proposed MC-17 would augment the MC-130 Hercules currently being used by the service, as well as replace the modified AMC strategic jet transports that support special operations missions. The presence of a MC-17 with the Special Operations Command will allow the direct deployment of special operations forces from the US to their drop zones behind enemy lines. However, the AMC plan is expected to cost over $233 million aircraft, from the $180-million standard C-17, due to the low rate production of the MC-17 and its specialized equipment.
