AUSTRIA/US: VA STAHL, NUCOR PROJECT UNDER THREAT
Article Abstract:
According to chief executive Peter Strahammer, the plan of VA Stahl to set up a rail-making joint venture in the US are under threat due to Austria's new political situation. Together with the Georgetown, Arkansas-based steel maker Nucor, VA Stahl has been planning an about US$ 250mn investment north of Memphis. The Austrian company was to take a 25-50% stake in the project that was to present the knowhow of VA Stahl's Donawitz mill in the production of top-hardened rails with lengths of 120 metres. VA Stahl is to take the decision on the construction of a compact steel mill in Europe in summer 2000. The project, that may be carried out in cooperation with a partner, will process scrap, and it will have an integrated rolling mill. It has not been decided yet whether the mill will serve mainly east or west European markets.
