Domain-name compromise
Article Abstract:
Chinese officials are seeking a way out of the confusion caused when U.S. software company VeriSign Inc. and the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) both began registering Chinese-character domain names for the internet using incompatible systems. The CNNIC advocates development of international standards for Chinese character domain names before opening registration to competition.

China sets conditions
Article Abstract:
China says it might support American efforts against terrorism, if the United States will aid Chinese efforts against "terrorism and separatism" in Taiwan and Tibet. On the face of it, the United States and China should both want to ensure the stability of Pakistan and to limit the spread of Islamic fundamentalism in western China and Central Asia. The United States is not likely to agree to the Chinese conditions, but China might still provide some intelligence support to the U.S. effort.

U.S. companies rue negative effects of the Cox report; clampdown on high-technology exports to China may threaten lucrative contracts
Article Abstract:
US firms are concerned over the potential adverse effects on their businesses in China of a 700-page report by a special committee of the House of Representatives urging for tighter controls on high-technology exports to the Asian country. A committee headed by Rep Christopher Cox recommended stricter scrutiny of exports to China as it alleged that the latter stole ideas from US laboratories in building its nuclear weaponry. The twin worries of US companies are that the US will impose tighter control on exports to China and that Chinese firms will prefer non-US-made products to do away with the risks and hassles.
