U.S. jobless claims hit 3-month low

The U.S. posted a record low in first-time unemployment benefits applications during the week of June 21, 2003. Claims fell to 404,000 during the week, a drop of 22,000. This backs the US Federal Reserve's claim that the labor market is beginning to stabilize.

The trade deficit in the U.S. fell unexpectedly for the August 2003 period as foreign car imports dropped. The U.S. posted a trade deficit of $39.2 billion (33.2 billion euros) for the month.
