U.S. wants Seoul to take baton on Korean relations
Article Abstract:
The Clinton administration will press South Korea to take the initiative in forging peaceful and positive relations with North Korea during Pres. Kim Young Sam's state visit to the US on Jul. 25-28, 1995. US foreign policy officials hope that Kim would follow the lead established by Roh Tae Woo, who successfully encouraged North Korea to sign an agreement to denuclearize the Korean peninsula. Meanwhile, Kim's advisers noted that the South Korean president was willing to hold talks with the North after Kim Il Jong has consolidated his power. However, the North Korean leader has yet to establish himself as the head of the communist regime.

Increased anti-American tenor of Korean probes troubles U.S
Article Abstract:
Several US officials have expressed concern over what they perceive as a growing anti-American slant in the South Korean government's investigation into political corruption. They state that there is a growing tendency to blame the corruption on the US government and American companies despite the lack of evidence. The US has not lodged an official protest but US officials are disappointed that Pres. Kim Young Sam has not done anything to dispel this notion.

Kim's approach complicates alliance with U.S. amid nuclear controversy
Article Abstract:
South Korean Pres. Kim Young Sam's willingness to oppose the US on certain policy issues has complicated South Korean-US relations. Kim refused to fund a $4 billion program, brokered by the US, to replace North Korea's nuclear reactors unless South Korea is allowed to take a primary role in the program. North Korea stated that it will not comply with the program if it involves the use of South Korean-made reactors.
