USAF learns to live with cyber attackers
Article Abstract:
A new aprpoach to information assurance has been adopted by the US Air Force Research with its Data Resiliency in Information Warfare program. One of the goals of the program is to develop and demonstrate technique that can recover from attacks on and intrusions into combat computer systems, repair any damage and verify the integrity of the reconstituted version. The demonstration system reveals the effects of, and response to, an attempt to corrupt the air tasking order forming part of a command-and- control battle management system. Such alterations are countered by storing multiple identical copies of data in different locations within a database.

Bees' knees shed light on robots and platforms
Article Abstract:
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Office of Naval Research have embarked on a research project that could help in the development of navigation systems for robots and other platforms. Studies of dancing honeybees when they return to the nest after finding food reveal that the cue to the direction and distance they traveled to get food is found visually. This means that the duration of the bee dance was 1msec for every 17.7 degrees of image motion in the eye which seems to be an absolute figure regardless of the terrain and vegetation in their flightpath.
