Uncharted waters
Article Abstract:
The British authorities are more optimistic about the prospects for the economy, and this is linked to a rapid recovery in gross domestic product in 1999. Unemployment has dropped and there is little sign of undue pressure from wage inflation. Inflation expectations have been lowered as the result of a long period of low inflation. There is also a reserve of people for employers to draw on, such as those previously looking after children, and long-term unemployment has dropped. There could still be increased inflationary pressure from higher commodity prices and a drop in the value of pound sterling.
