Unilever's India subsidiary expected to offset weakness in Southeast Asia

Hindustan Lever Ltd., Unilever PLC's Indian unit, is expected to post 1998 second-quarter pre-tax earnings that will nullify any problems Unilever might have regarding Southeast Asia. The Indian subsidiary is expected to boost Unilever's 1998 second-quarter earnings, which will be announced on Aug. 7, 1998, to 774 million pounds sterling ($1.27 billion), a 4% improvement from the 746 million pounds sterling the Anglo-Dutch food and household-goods firm posted for the same period in 1997. Hindustan Lever, despite the turmoil in Southeast Asian-Pacific region, is expected to post a year-to-year increase in earnings of 28%.

At Cadbury, a bit of whimsy tastes just right

Cadbury Schweppes PLC is becoming more popular in Australia after it launched its chocolate Yowies in May 1997. In Cadbury's chocolate incarnation, Yowies, or the Australian Big Foot, are around six cm tall, with nicknames such as Boof, Rumble and Ditty. Each chocolate Yowie covers a capsule that contains a to-be-assembled miniature plastic antipodean animals, such as a koala bear or a wombat, along with a pamphlet containing information on the animals. Cadbury's chocolate Yowies have already achieved a 40% share of the children's chocolate market in Australia.

EU Commission approves Internet-services venture
Article Abstract:
AOL/CIS France S.A.S.'s creation has received the approval of the European Commission. The France-based firm, a joint venture between Bertelsmann AG, America Online Inc., Cegetel SA and Canal SA, is expected to market, develop and provide Internet access services to non-business entities in France. Under the terms of the approval, AOL/CIS will acquire CompuServe Interactive Services France SNC and AOL Bertelsmann Online France SNC, two AOL/Bertelsmann ventures that are already operating in France, as its wholly-owned subsidiaries.
