Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) holds 32.91 percent stake in Vashisti Detergents Ltd (VDL). VDL produces toilet soaps, detergent cakes and powders, fatty acids and sulphonic acids. It also produces major raw materials. VDL and HLL have entered into a five-year long-term sourcing pact which will lead to maximum capacity utilisation. VDL, which was in the red, began its turnaround 1996- 97. It posted a small net profit of Rs0.25 crore in the first half of 1997-98 against a loss of Rs6.05 crore in 1996-97. VDL floated a rights shares in October 1996 to reduce high cost loans and to augment its working capital. VDL also cut down its interest burden from Rs9.04 crore in 1995-96 to Rs2.38 crore in 1996-97. Its scrip is being traded at Rs53. Hindustan Lever Ltd increased its sales by 18.48 percent to Rs7819.71 crore in 1997. Its net profit increased by about 35 percent to Rs560.37 crore. The company has over a million retailers and over 7000 stockists. The company has been expanding mostly through acquisitions. It has recently acquired Pond's and Lakme. Vashisti Detergents Ltd, a member of the Hindustan Levers group, posted 61 percent increase in net profit to Rs1.16 crore for the third quarter of 1998-99. It recorded turnover of Rs53.77 crore (Rs39 crore) and gross profit of Rs2 crore (Rs1.7 crore).
