VOLUMES MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
Article Abstract:
The aggregate production of the primary aluminium makers was 3.96 lakh tonnes in the first 9 months ended December 31, 1998, against the target of 4.65 lakh tonnes. The total output of aluminium was 4.09 lakh tonnes in the first 9 months ended December 31, 1997. The National Aluminium Company (Nalco) suffered breakdown of smelter pots in early 1998. Its output fell to less than 1 lakh tonnes during April-December 1998 (1.46 lakh tonnes in the same period of 1997). It has lost 47,000 tonnes of aluminium production and a growth of 6-7 percent. The total output loss of the National Aluminium Company is estimated at 56,000-57,000 tonnes. Hindalco recorded a growth of 20 percent in output in the first 9 months ended December 31, 1998. The volume growth will help the company improve its bottomline as the international price of aluminium is falling. (rk) (kvr)
