VOLVO TO FOCUS ON CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT

Volvo India Pvt Ltd, the 100 percent subsidiary of Volvo of Sweden, is to concentrate on the manufacture of construction equipment and diesel and marine engines in India. Volvo India Pvt Ltd has an installed production capacity of 1,000 diesel engine and about 200 marine engines for multiple applications. It makes excavators, wheel loaders and motor graders. Now, these equipment are imported and sold in India. Volvo India Pvt Ltd plans to either manufacture these construction equipment itself locally or through sub- contractors. Volvo India Pvt Ltd sells its construction equipment under the Samsung brand and the engines under the Volvo Penta brand. (tsm)

SICAL PLANNING TO INVEST Rs22 Cr IN TWO NEW JVs

South India Corporation (Agencies) Ltd (Sical) proposes to invest more than Rs22 crore in two new joint ventures. The joint ventures will be in the field of logistics and auto components. Sical also plans to tie up with PSA India Pte Ltd of Singapore and Nur Investment and Trading Pte Ltd for port clearing operations. It is also signing a joint venture with UT Automotive Inc of Michigan in the US for producing cooling modules for cars. During 1997-98, Sical posted sales of Rs796.17 crore (Rs462.02 crore in 1996-97) and a net profit of Rs15.19 crore (Rs14.05 crore). (ag)

Honda Motor Company of Japan plans to float a holding company in India to oversee its three joint venture operations in India. It has proposed to increase synergy between its joint ventures, Hero Honda, Honda Siel Cars and Honda Siel Power Equipment and provide an overview of group operations. Even after the holding company comes into being, the three joint ventures will remain as independent entities. (gsh)
