Independent entrepreneurs in Japan are seeing the environment for innovation and growth gradually thaw. Bekkoame Internet was started by Kenichi Ozaki three years ago, to provide Internet services for individuals, and it currently has over 90,000 subscribers. Other new generation leaders include Softbank, started by entrepreneur Masayoshi Son, H.I.S., set up in 1980 and currently the largest seller of reduced rate plane tickets, and Pasona, set up by Yasuyuki Nambu.

QB House is a Japanese barber which is geared to salaried men seeking a rapid haircut with no shave or wash. QB House aims to control costs, and has benefited from deregulation of the retail industry which has allowed more flexibility over prices. The company is attracting trade from traditional barbers, and the barbers' federation is advising members to focus on value-added services such as advice on hair care, in order to compete against QB House.

Warmth in Siberia: Hashimoto and Yeltsin hope to thaw relations

Japanese prime minister Ryutaro Hashimoto and Russian president Boris Yeltsin are to meet in November at a summit in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. It is the start of a rapprochement which could change the strategic balance in East Asia. However the main barrier to closer Tokyo-Moscow links is the dispute over small islands taken by Soviet troops at the end of World War II.
