Poets are always looking to the past for inspiration, while at the same time trying to develop new ways of making language fresh. Several poets with new volumes of verse are discussed including John Ash, Kenneth Koch, Sandy Solomon, Elaine Feinstein and Andrew Motion.

Frost was invited by President John F. Kennedy to recite a poem at his inauguration in 1961. Kennedy chose Frost because he had defended New England against a radio interviewer's question as to whether the region was in decay.

Many poets seemed to lose their talents after they became poets laureate. The poetry of William Burroughs and others declined in quality as they started to write poems for civic occasions.
