Vertical product differentiation with entry
Article Abstract:
The non-simultaneous entry of firms into an industry affects product differentiation among such firms. Analysis of both the multiple dominant players and the sequential entry models shows that the dominant incumbents will maximize product differentiation, while last movers will select an intermediate technological quality. Firm profits are directly related to the quality chosen; thus, later entrants gain an advantage over some incumbents. The gradual rise in variable costs associated with the change in quality does not affect the results substantially.

More on Hotelling's stability in competition
Article Abstract:
A particular situation where Hotelling's model of spatial competition uses a one-dimensional boundaryless space in stead of a linear space is discussed. This variant is analyzed in an attempt to find a solution to an elusive equilibrial situation for the price and location variables. Results of analysis show that there exists a perfect equilibrium in pure strategies and that the earlier assumption of non-equilibrium only occurs in situations where not one firm has competitors on either side of its location.
