Opposition to Indonesia's ruling party Golkar has evolved from a mere ritual of the quintennial election campaign to strong protest over real issues. The Muslim party, PPP, has become the main protest party after the removal of PDI leader Megawati Sukarnoputri. A Golkar victory remains certain.

Indonesia for the first time has a vocal opposition to Pres Suharto, led by Megawati Sukarnoputri, daughter of late Pres Sukarno. The ruling party, Golkar, managed to have Megawati deposed as leader of the Democratic Party, which spurred a violent protest by her supporters.
