Article Abstract:
Myanmar has launched a massive tourism program campaign called 'Visit Myanmar 1996' which aims to attract 500,000 foreign visitors during the year. Many local residents expressed mixed views regarding the tourist promotion campaign. Some believe that the income generated by the program will help alleviate poverty in the country while others note that the revenues will only help support the oppressive military junta. Article Abstract:
The Department of Tourism reports that hotel occupancy rates in the Philippines for the first seven months of 1997 has risen 11% from 65.39% in the same period the previous year. The Department attributes the rise in occupancy rates to cheaper travel rates in the country. However, the agency has no idea of how the recent curency devaluation would affect the industry since the rates cover the period before currency devaluation began.
