Volkswagen's earnings show the road is rough

Volkswagen AG posted a fall in net profits of less than 1% despite an increase in its sales during the first nine months of 1999. The company also cautioned that its earnings for the entire 1999 year may not reach the levels they had in 1998. Volkswagen posted 1.5 billion marks (766.9 million euros) in net profits. This was based on a 10% sales improvement to 110.12 billion marks.
