PepsiCo India (PCI) is facing a tough competition in India with its rival Coca Cola India (CCI) making right moves in the cola market. CCI is imitating the advertising styles of PCI which is pushing the company into tight corner. PCI will now concentrate more on teenagers, and will increase its access points by 200,000. It has currently half a million access points. It claims to be available at nearly 80 percent of the theatres in India. During 1999, PCI will introduce a new globe logo on Pepsi's glass bottles. In June, 1998, CCI claims to have 56.60 percent share of the Rs3,000 crore aerated software drink market compared to PC's 39.9 percent. PEPSI SCORES OVER COKE WITH 15% MARKET GROWTH

Pepsi has outperformed Coca-Cola in terms of over all growth during the third quarter of 1998. During the period, Pepsi posted a 15 percent rise in its market while Coca-Cola posted a 11 percent rise in its market growth. Between January-September 1998, Pepsi's market grew to 32 percent while Coke's market grew to 24 percent. Till now, Pepsi has sold 100 million cases. It plans to sell an additional 15 million by the end of 1998. Coke plans to sell about 128 million cases during 1998. During 1997, Pepsi sold 87 million cases while Coke sold 108 million cases. (ag)

COKE, PEPSI TO UP CAN PRICES
Article Abstract:
Coca-Cola and Pepsi are likely to increase the prices of their cans and PET bottles. Coca-Cola is raising the price by next week and Pepsi after 15-20 days. The cans price will be increased to Rs18 from Rs13. The PET bottles price will be increased to Rs40 from Rs38. The cans and the caps for the PET bottles are imported. The recent hike in customs duty on imports by 4 percent is attributed to the price hike of bottles and cans. (rk)
