Two financially-troubled financial institutions, Spain's Banesto and France's Credit Lyonnais, have used many of the same techniques to try to return to profitability. Each has undertaken management reshufflings, liquidated certain industrial assets, and reemphasized domestic markets.

The merger of Bayerische Hypotheken und Wechelsebank and Bayerische Vereinsbank created HypoVereinsbank. There were initial problems arising from the merger, as is examined in detail.
