What, so soon?
Article Abstract:
The probable issuance of rights shares by the Chinese TV-tube manufacturing company, Shanghai Vacuum Device Co. to raise US$110 million, has caused foreign investors much consternation. Investors are concerned both because the rights issue will decrease the value of their shares and because it is unclear what the money is needed for. The announcement of the prospective issue at the end of Aug 1992, led to an immediate fall in A shares and B shares, sold to foreigners only, and if the trend continues the company may have to withdraw the rights issue.

Chain-mail suits
Article Abstract:
Lawsuits brought in late 1994 by Lehman Bros against two Chinese state firms continue to stir new activity. In Jan 1996 Sinochem, a US subsidiary of the firm Unipec, filed a suit claiming Lehman neglected its fiduciary duty and made trades without proper authorization, and seeking $300 million in damages. That may be an effort to get a better position regarding Lehman's own suit, which could settle out of court soon to avoid damaging revelations about Unipec managers. Lehman's suit against Minmetals is unlikely to settle.

Be prepared: China is a minefield for even the sturdiest firms
Article Abstract:
Matsushita's experience in Beijing illustrates the pitfalls that China holds for projects with even the best pedigrees and unlimited official support. Launched in 1987 at Deng Xiaoping's request of Konosuke Matsushita, Beijing-Matsushita makes 3 million television picture tubes annually, with 31% exported to Southeast Asia. Recent complicating factors include the rising yen, higher local costs for supplies and workers, competition from smuggled television sets, a limited market in China, and poor local infrastructure.
