Seducing China's rich: despite chaotic beginnings, China's art auction houses have flourished, and years of indifference to art have been brought to an end by new prosperity
Article Abstract:
Wang Yannan, the daughter of former Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang, is vice-president of China Guardian Auction Co and is at the forefront of the auction scene. The art auction scene in China now appears much like that of the world's most cosmopolitan cities. International houses such as Christies and Sotheby's have also established offices in China. However there is criticism of the irregularities and unprofessional conduct in the auction scene and there are unsufficient experts to judge the quality of artworks.

China's brand-name cat
Article Abstract:
Shanghai's state-owned White Cat enterprise launched in 1995 a direct challenge to its foreign partner Unilever's Omo laundry detergent. Packaged almost identically and aimed at the same high-end market, Super-Hi Ultra detergent has not yet matched Omo's market share, but White Cat is working to develop distributor relationships rather than spending heavily on advertising. Other White Cat products have a 9% share of the detergent market nationwide, so it relies on existing brand-name identification.
