When East Timor speaks
Article Abstract:
There was a high turnout for the referendum on independence in East Timor, and the people are likely to have decided they want to become independent. Yet the aftermath of the referendum is likely to be characterized by an increase in violence which the military men are unlikely to deal with. Many in the military have vested interests in preventing independencefor East Timor. There would be a delay in sending a United Nations (UN) force to keep the peace, though a non-UN force could be sent more rapidly. Indonesia should allow East Timor to become independent if the people so desire.

The question for East Timor
Article Abstract:
East Timor is holding a referendum on self rule and this has been delayed due to intimidation. There is also a need to change the question being asked in the referendum. East Timor was invaded by Indonesia in 1975 and became an Indonesian province in 1976, with famine and massacre following. There are fears as to how such a poor country could survive if it became independent. There has been violence in the preparation for the referendum. There should be an option for a later vote on independence if auonomy is chosen, and the Indonesian army should withdraw.
