When two become one
Article Abstract:
Maintaining the company culture of an acquired business is important in the promotion of a successful acquisition outcome. Failures often occur when the acquired company does not keep its own identity, its brands are not developed, or there are management clashes. Success is more likely when both companies have similar cultures. The appointment of an external consultant or manager to oversee the acquisition may also prove beneficial. Reviews of some acquisitions, including that of research consultancy Opinion Leader Research by Chime Communications, illustrate the issues involved.

Frozen out
Article Abstract:
The UK ice-cream industry has been investigated by the Competition Commission which has been looking at the practice of ice-cream firms offering free freezers to shops for their exclusive use. The Commission is due to publish their findings in Sept 1999. Small ice-cream manufacturers find their goods are not sold in some retail outlets because they are not permitted access to the freezer supplied by another company. Some of the larger companies suggest if their sales are reduced they will cut jobs. Some 885 million pounds sterling is spent on ice-cream products annually.
