The ruling Fianna Fail Party is expected to form a coalition with the rival Labour Party in 1993, despite having waged a negative campaign against Labour in the Nov 1992 elections. The unusual right-left coalition makes sense in the context of Irish politics.

The Nov 1992 elections brought new blood and new ideas to Irish politics. The two traditional leading parties, Fine Gael and Fianna Fail, each lost five percent of the vote. The Labor Party grew to 20%. Restrictions on abortion were loosened slightly.
