Whitbread may purchase pubs from Allied Domecq

Whitbread PLC is engaged in negotiations to purchase several thousand pubs in the UK from Allied Domecq PLC. Whitbread is attempting to purchase up to 3,544 pubs for approximately 2.25 billion pound sterling ($3.64 billion). The deal would effectively bring about the demerger of Allied Domecq, the number two player in the global spirits industry. The deal would enable Allied Domecq to concentrate on its spirits business.

The UK Department of Trade and Industry is referring Whitbread PLC's proposed cash-and-stock purchase of Allied Domecq PLC's pubs to the Competition Commission. Whitbread's planned 2.88 billion pound sterling (4.41 billion euros) acquisition of Allied Domecq's more than 3,500 pubs has raised concerns over competition issues. Whitbread is attempting to outbid rival Punch Taverns Ltd. for the pubs.
