Who's running Germany?
Article Abstract:
The German Social Democratic Party (SDP) chancellor, Gerhard Schroder, was vague during his election campaign, and businessmen are disappointed in his performance. His drive for modernization has been affected by Oskar Lafontaine having acquired power that was to have gone to modernisers. No-one appears to be in control in Germany. There is confusion about tax policy. Economic growth is slowing, and unemployment is high and looks set to increase. Schroder is starting to take back power from Lafontaine, and should also set out his goals.

Napoleon strikes
Article Abstract:
The German Social Democratic Party (SDP) chairman, Oskar Lafontaine, is to become finance minister alongside Gerhard Schroder as chancellor. The finance ministry is to include the Europe and planning departments that were formerly part of the economics ministry. Jost Stollmann was expected to become economics minister but has declined to take this post. Lafontaine's policies are less market-oriented than those of Schroder, who presents himself as a friend of German businesses.
