Winning the peace: Clinton grants Hanoi diplomatic recognition
Article Abstract:
President Clinton took an unneeded political risk on July 11,1995, in granting full diplomatic recognition to Vietnam despite opposition by Republican Party leaders. The move may help Secretary of State Warren Christopher at Asean meetings in July, and place Vietnam on a more even footing with its neighbors. US officials said the move did not seek to counter China's might, and Beijing announced its support. However, the leading Republican candidate for US President demands a fuller accounting of missing US servicemen.

Museum peace: U.S. curators seek truce over the plane that atom-bombed Hiroshima
Article Abstract:
A proposed display at the National Air and Space Museum in the US has ignited a furor over the atom bomb's role in history and the US and Japanese positions on World War II. The Enola Gay, which dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, on Aug 6, 1945, will be the centerpiece of a display intended to address the emergence of the atomic age. Furious charges by World War II veterans about the portrayals of Japan as an innocent victim, have led to an expansion of the display and revisions of the text.

Caught in the Net
Article Abstract:
The Free Burma Coalition has set up a page on the Internet, aimed at ousting the military regime. The Burmese Internet activism has resulted in greater awareness in the US. The Internet could prove useful in drawing attention to other causes such as the Indonesian invasion of Timor, and the Chinese conduct in Tibet. A specialist on Southeast Asia at George Washington University, Washington, DC believes that the US congress will take notice if the Internet has a lot of such information.
