Article Abstract:
Airlines earnings are still in a slump even though passenger traffic grew by 7% in 1992. Air travel has been boosted by low airfares but those low fares have also reduced the yield on each passenger mile. To raise earnings airlines will cut costs through consolidation and automation.

Article Abstract:
British Airways is going ahead with acquisitions that could make it the first global airline, although profits have fallen 35%. Several problems are troubling the airline, such as threatened strikes and market share losses in the North Atlantic.

If the US government would continue the move towards airline deregulation started in the 1970s the stronger airlines could become more financially stable. Financially weak airlines should be allowed to fail.
