Article Abstract:
The European Community is finding itself having to cope with the demands of its less affluent southern members as it prepares its next five-year financial plan for 1993. It is hoped agreement on the plan can be reached at the Lisbon summit scheduled for June.

The Uruguay round of GATT talks is coming close to success, as the US and European Community are reaching compromises on agricultural trade. The EC may drop its efforts to protect some commodities. The US is willing to decrease its demand on export subsidies.

Glut, fraud and eco-damage
Article Abstract:
European Union subsidies for olive oil have led to an increase in planting in Spain, with intensive methods leading to ecological damage. There is also fraud in that trees planted after a deadline set in 1998 are earning subsidies.
