Young turks on the move
Article Abstract:
Malaysian politics are undergoing a generational shift as elections for the leadership of the the United Malays National Organization (Umno) intensify. Umno has been the dominant political force in the country for at least twenty years, with Umno member Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad serving as Prime Minister since 1981. Party elections, therefore, are more important than national elections. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is a generation younger than Mahathir, and is hoping to lead the party towards a more urban platform and transform Malaysia into an industrialised country.

Uneasy lies the head: rally against Kelantan sultan raises tension
Article Abstract:
Demonstrators in the Malaysian state of Kelantan on Apr 10, 1992 protested the political involvement of the state's monarch, Sultan Islamail Petra. The protesters assembled outside the headquarters of the United Malays National Organization (Umno) in the city of Kota Baru. Umno governs most of Malaysia but lost Kelantan to the Islamic and Semangat 46 parties in 1990. Many observers believe that Umno actually instigated the demonstration to attack the sultan's preference for the rival parties. Umno has also lost support in the state of Sabah.

Lawyers' verdict: move to end boycott of judiciary's head fails
Article Abstract:
Lawyers came up with three reconciliation resolutions at the meeting of the Malaysian Bar Council on Mar 14, 1992. The resolutions, which were designed to effect a reconciliation with the lord president, Tun Abdul Hamid Omar, were all turned down through a vote. The deterioration of the relationship between members of the bar council and Hamid began with the government's interference in the judiciary in 1988, which resulted in Tun Mohamed Salleh Abas' suspension as the council's lord president.
