Retail sales off in Aug: 0.3% loss tops forecasts

Philadelphia reported lower retail sales in line with the pattern of the sales nationwide. The sales were low mainly in auto sales followed by declining sales in furniture, clothing and department stores sales, but there was an increase in sales in other fields leading to a mix response from the consumers reflecting the selective purchase of the consumers.

US retailers lost $33.6 billion in 2004 by way of inventory loss through theft, fraud and errors dubbed as shrinkage. It has become a significant issue for retailers whose battle for profit would mean cracking down on employee theft and shoplifting.
