A corporate trend in need of reversal
Article Abstract:
Corporate provision of private health insurance is increasingly less likely to continue cover once employees leave. This reduces the company's insurance bill, and encourages loyalty among employees. Companies benefit from tax relief, while individuals do not receive tax relief unles they are over 60 years old. UK state provision for illness cover is being reduced, and there is a need for greater flexibility in this market, with the tax system reflecting this need.

Stress in uncertain times
Article Abstract:
Health insurance is a complex issue involving a number of considerations such as a replacement income, payment for medical treatment, and provision for paymentsinto pension schemes. Critical illness insurance covers pre-determined illnesses. Government provision for a replacement income has been reduced, but this has had little impact on hte market for private insurance to supplement the state system. Premiums are not high due to competition in the industry.

Personal health insurance
Article Abstract:
The UK personal medical insurance market can supplement the National Health Service (NHS). The major player in the market is BUPA, though other players have been entering. Premiums are affected by the size of the excess, and policies tend to exclude chronic conditions, including renal failure. Replacement income schemes can help avoid a major drop in income due to illness. Income replacement can offer more protection than a criticial illness policy.
