With Coty, Benckiser bucks it stingy image
Article Abstract:
The acquisition of Pfizer's prolific Coty division makes Joh. A. Benckiser the largest mass-marketer of fragrances in the US. It is also an indication that Benckiser will depart from its traditional emphasis on cost control in an effort to stay at the top of the fragrance market. Coty's successful promotion strategies and knack for targeting new areas of growth were rewarded with $280 million in sales in 1991, up 17% from 1990. Benckiser plans to use Coty as the springboard for a global personal care business.

P&G baking-soda toothpaste
Article Abstract:
Proctor and Gamble is finally developing a baking soda version of Crest toothpaste after losing market share to Church and Dwight Company's Arm and Hammer over a four-year period. The new product will be tested in the Phoenix, AZ, area. Since the introduction of Arm and Hammer toothpaste in Aug 1988, P&G's share of the toothpaste market has plummeted, falling from from 41% to 36.5%. Church and Dwight, on the other hand, gained 10.5% of the market during that time.
