A first look at an expert computer system
Article Abstract:
Expertech Ltd. of Great Britain is marketing an expert system known as Xi that runs on IBM PCs, as well as on microcomputers manufactured by Wang, Grid Case, Research Nimbus, and DEC. Although the response time on Xi is slow, the system is easy to use (employing a simple English grammar) and seems excellent for recording the expertise in a field such as accounting for simple applications and training purposes. Xi offers existing knowledge bases in personnel management areas and allows users to create new knowledge bases in fields of their choosing. As an expert system, Xi is not 'intelligent', and is only indirectly related to artificial intelligence developments.

Expert assistance at an economic price
Article Abstract:
The 795 pound-sterling Crystal expert system shell allows accountants to design expert systems without the help of knowledge engineers. Crystal helps professionals enter rules into a knowledge base and helps end users make decisions. Crystal can handle up to 3,000 rules and runs on IBM PC-ATs or compatibles. This program is recommended for designers and accountants who are no longer satisfied with off-the-shelf applications.
