Health locus of control and helpfulness of prayer
Article Abstract:
Almost a quarter of a million people undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) each year to treat blocked heart arteries, the leading cause of death in the industrialized world. Heart surgery is an emotional event not only because of the seriousness of the disease and the mortality associated with it, but because the heart is popularly thought of as the center of emotion. How a person approaches heart surgery, feeling fearful or challenged, depends on a number of factors, including ''locus of control.'' This is a psychological concept relating to an individual's belief about the amount of control one has over what is happening. This study explored the relationship between health locus of control and the helpfulness of prayer prior to surgery. One hundred subjects were surveyed. Seventy-two were male, 87 were Protestant, 84 were married, and 96 said they used prayer as a coping mechanism. No relationship between prayer and health locus of control was found, even though 70 subjects said prayer was extremely helpful. This agrees with the findings of other researchers on the perceived helpfulness of prayer in coping with illness. Prayer, meditation and relaxation techniques all provide physiological benefits. This study had several limitations, both methodological and conceptual, and these are frankly discussed. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

A lion and some tigers
Article Abstract:
Sri Lanka offers both opportunities and challenges to foreign investors. Its attractions include its strategic location at the crossroads of important shipping routes to South and East Asia, a literate and educated workforce, high rate of fluency in the English language, and a relatively high quality of life. In addition, the government of Pres Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is committed to economic liberalization and the creation of an environment conducive to foreign investment. Attractive incentives are being offered to attract foreign capital, including freedom to repatriate earnings and capital, 100% foreign ownership in virtually all economic sectors, and constitutional guarantees on the safety of foreign investment. The downside to investing in Sri Lanka includes the 15-year-old conflict between the government and Tamil separatists. Hardest hit by the prolonged civil war is the tourist industry.
